Grateful for Food that Nourishes Me

January 06, 2020 by Sara Lashbrook

I have been saying a prayer to and for my food since I arrived. At times, I forget and mid chew I stop and pray.  My prayer is a version of a song that I learned from Erin Solomon and Erin Tanzer at a TSS workshop.  While the specifics of the prayer change each meal, I am consistent. For example, last night Kajal, who is 7 was slurping her milk and talking with her sister in between. Her voice brings me such joy and in that moment, I expressed sincere gratitude for that.

I close my eyes, bow my head and place my hands, palms down over my food and say:

I thank the earth for feeding my belly.

I thank the trees for the air we breathe.

I thank the sun for warming my bones.

I thank the river for nourishing my soul.

I thank the ether for guiding my way on.

Om Shanti Shanti Shanti
